Q: Time Capsule local snapshot error (MTM FS server)

Hi

I found an error in the console log which happens every second.

It seems the Time Capsule causes this error:

12/01/15 21:28:46.890 mtmfs[4456]: MTM FS server retrying...

12/01/15 21:28:46.891 mtmfs[4456]: MTM FS server failed to start because of error -1

12/01/15 21:28:48.392 mtmfs[4456]: MTM FS server retrying...

12/01/15 21:28:48.393 mtmfs[4456]: MTM FS server failed to start because of error -1

12/01/15 21:28:48.955 k9filter[63]: [2015-01-12 21:28:48] WRN: HostFileMonitor: Hosts file is missing or invalid (1)

12/01/15 21:28:49.163 k9filter[63]: [2015-01-12 21:28:49] WRN: HostFileMonitor: Hosts file is missing or invalid (1)

12/01/15 21:28:49.894 mtmfs[4456]: MTM FS server retrying...

12/01/15 21:28:49.895 mtmfs[4456]: MTM FS server failed to start because of error -1

If I disable the local snapshot: sudo tmutil disablelocal

The errors are gone..

But I've no idea why I get these errors.
I formatted my whole Time Capsule and startet from scratch but the same errors...

I working with Yosemite and the 2nd or 3nd generation of Time Capsule.

Any ideas on this?

I appreciate any help...

Yosemite is actually not just buggy it is broken. The DNS is broken. After you restart the TC for the next few minutes yosemite can find it.. after that it is lost again.

Users have finally got so sick of the situation they have started hacking mDNSResponder back from 10.9.

    See http://arstechnica.com/apple/2015/01/why-dns-in-os-x-10-10-is-broken-and-what-yo u-can-do-to-fix-it/

You will get error after error because Yosemite cannot find the server..

...find copies of 10.9 mDNSResponder, mDNSResponderHelper, and their plist files

This solution only helps if I still have files from OS X 10.9 which I doesn't....

    Any other suggestions?

    Thank you

The easiest solution for now is either use a external drive.. like USB plugged into the computer.. with no network Time Machine works much better.

Or turn Time Machine off and use Carbon Copy Cloner.. or one of the other 3rd party backup programs..

It is much better IMHO to pay some money for reliable backups.. than get Yosemite given to you with heaps of bugs.. !!

I fixed this problem today on my MacBook running El Capitan.  Like everyone else with this problem, my Console was getting an endless series like this:

3/14/16 12:27:10.567 PM mtmfs[526]: MTM FS server retrying...

3/14/16 12:27:10.568 PM mtmfs[526]: MTM FS server failed to start because of error -1

3/14/16 12:27:12.068 PM mtmfs[526]: MTM FS server retrying...

3/14/16 12:27:12.068 PM mtmfs[526]: MTM FS server failed to start because of error -1

3/14/16 12:27:13.642 PM mtmfs[526]: MTM FS server retrying...

3/14/16 12:27:13.643 PM mtmfs[526]: MTM FS server failed to start because of error -1

3/14/16 12:27:15.143 PM mtmfs[526]: MTM FS server retrying...

3/14/16 12:27:15.144 PM mtmfs[526]: MTM FS server failed to start because of error -1

3/14/16 12:27:16.715 PM mtmfs[526]: MTM FS server retrying...

3/14/16 12:27:16.715 PM mtmfs[526]: MTM FS server failed to start because of too many retries

This stream can be stopped by disabling local Time Machine snapshots in the Terminal, but that was not a satisfying fix.

I had read somewhere that the private/etc/hosts file could be involved in this problem. (Sorry I've misplaced the link.)  This caught my eye because I had tinkered with my hosts file recently (another story).  I noticed in Finder that my hosts file was identified as a "Plain Text" file and had a .txt extension.  Nearby files identify as "TextEdit Document" and have no extension.

My fix was as simple as deleting the .txt extension from the hosts file.  No more MTM FS server error.

While digging around in the Console, I also noticed that the dreaded RIMalbumartdaemon was causing a lot of log entries as well, so I got rid of that as well.  Wasn't easy.

    I got the error

mtmfs[1525]: cannot bind custom tcp socket

mtmfs[1525]: MTM FS server failed to start because of error 15

Time machine is off, has always been!

In my case, like Wayne, I have 'modified' hosts file by just renaming it hostsxyz

the console does not show the mtm fs error, some processes started 'normally'

    then set back its name

for the moment the error is gone

I am editing a lot hosts file to add new domains to block them

    0 bad.com

Until now, no problem with that...

it was correctly named "hosts" (no extension) and opens with textedit if I double-click but I edit it only with BBEdit, a pure text... I did not see anything incorrect...

    Hope this could help.
