Q: Can the Apple TV replace my Chromecast?

I am thinking of getting an Apple TV to replace my Chromecast but I need to know more about what can it actually do and can't do.

For example:

Would I be able to mirror OS X Safari to my TV? Will there be any lag with the Audio/Video if I was watching YouTube? What about the resolution, will it be mirrored at 720p or 1080p?

Play Plex on my TV? Would it be Plex Web or the Plex Mac App?

Play iTunes Media on my TV? Would I be controlling the playback from my computer or via the Apple Remote?

What else can I do with an Apple TV?

MacBook Air (11-inch Mid 2013), OS X Yosemite (10.10)

it mirrors the mavs screen apart from drm protected material such as dvd and blueray and such which is illegal to transfer unencrypted
