Q: Whats in the cloud

Have to firmware update my external drive. Is or can I back it up to the cloud while it is down.? All I see as backed up to the iCloud is Mail, Photos, Safari, etc. Are all my Photoshop, Keynote, document folders etc. and documents there ? Is my whole external or internal drive backed up in the cloud? Where can I put my ext drives files during the upgrade? Confused, Bill

iCloud is not meant as a backup for the Mac. You can backup your mobile devices to iCloud, if you enable it.

Which MacOS X version are you using?

    • With MacOS X10.9.5 or earlier, if you used "Documents in the Cloud", you may have saved your iWork documents in iCloud, see:  iCloud: About using iWork for iOS and iCloud
    • With MacOS X 10.10, if you enabled iCloud Drive, you may have stored other documents on iCloud Drive, if you saved them there.  See: iCloud Drive FAQ

But if you never stored documents in iCloud from your mac, there will be no saved documents to recover.
