Finder window does not refresh

Background:

I run a small engineering office. It has 21 employees. All using apple computers. (7) seven of these work stations are running the Solid State Mac Pros. The rest are running various other apple computers such as mac mini's or imacs, etc. Up until 12/28, all work stations have been running on Mavericks.

Last year, we upgraded our apple server to a new solidstate imac mini running Yosemite server. It has been running without any hitches for about 1 1/2 months.

Problem:

starting when I added a Yosemite computer (imac5K) on 12/28. Now we are seeing issues with finder not updating.

- first started with the Yosemite work station. When I was installing software (clean install) I noticed issues with the finder window updating. The engineer that uses this work station has indicated that this seems to be happening on a daily basis. The only way to get the finder to update is to relaunch.

Now I have discovered two other (Mavericks) work stations where this is happening. In both instances, I had to force quite / relaunch the finder before the missing files would appear in the finder window.

Is the apple computer team aware of these issues?

Is there anything I need to do to get this to stop?

Please advise.

I'm having what I think is the same issue, or at least a related one with Finder not updating properly. I download a file via Chrome into a folder I have open in Finder. Sometimes I see the file appear visually at the bottom of the finder window, even though it should not, since it's sorted by "kind". But regardless of if I see it or not, it seems everything is offset by 1 (not sure if it's up or down). So I click a file to open it, and instead get the next one before or after (again, not sure which). It's super annoying. Simply closing the finder window and opening a new one fixes, but it's a bunch of extra clicks and searching to find what I want. Very annoying. I can't believe Apple hasn't addressed these issues in MacOS (this started when I was on Yosemite and continues after the MacOS update).

I submitted a bug as suggested early in this thread. I hope others have done the same so that Apple will take notice.

This is the sort of bug that tarnishes their "it just works" image, so you'd think they'd be eager to fix.

Same here, it *****, and its random. I work on a 2012 iMac running 10.11.16 and connect to another iMac with the same specs via cat 6. Randomly when I go to pull down files recently created on the other computer the folder on my end appears empty and files will not sync over. The only solve I have found is to eject and remount the other machine. What a pain in the rear / time suck / cause of concern / *** Apple!

Anyone having this issue when both computers are running sierra?

I have this issue as well. Running El Capitan (10.11.6) on what I believe is a Linux-based network at work. My solution is to create a new folder in the spot where I expect the new files to be. This seems to force a refresh of the folder's contents, and shows any new files/folders in that location. Then I delete that new folder I created. Not ideal, but a whole lot simpler than rebooting/disconnecting/etc.

same here, all of a sudden no refresh in finder. this led to enormous errors on cloud services or missing / corrupt files when doing folder maintenance, etc. there´s not a single response from apple, nowhere, nada. osx yosemite macbook here, i could clean install el capitan and it would probably be gone, but i´d also have to tweak my system for days to get it the way i have it now. so please - apple - get it together and do something for your money, **** it!

I've been having this problem too, particularly when I take screen shots. They pile up on the desktop, but neither the desktop itself nor a window open to the desktop show the files.

It will refresh if I move a file to the trash from the window. So, creating a folder with Command-Shift-N and then immediately deleting it with Command-Delete will cause the window to refresh. Saving a file into the Desktop from a normal application like BBEdit will also force the Finder to refresh the window.

It appears that the Move to Trash routine and Save dialog box triggers the Finder to refresh, but UNIX-y amd background applications don't. In the past the Finder would actually monitor the underlying file system to see if changes were made.

When we create a new folder or file within in the server, within a specific file share, the non-refreshing finder window will not show the new folder. if we click out of that particular location....then click back it, it doesn't refresh the finder window; therefore the user does not see the new file.

It isn't until we "force quit" the finder and/or "relaunch" the finder that we see the new file or folder that was created.

It is very odd. It is also troubling.

Any thoughts?

As far as I can tell, the answer is yes; however, there was one instance where I had a structural engineer, using a macPro, running a high level structural analysis program, who was working with an architect in the office, also using a MacPro but was building 3D models using a mac program. The architect would revise the model, then load it onto the server....there seemed to be a considerable delay before the file could be visible for the engineer to see. We assumed this was merely an issue between windows and mac OSX.

This problem occurred prior to having any Yosemite computers on the network.

Could this be related to us using Yosemite Server?

What are your thoughts.

I've been having the same problem on both a Mavericks and a Yosemite machine. I'm not working off a server, and this problem was isolated to my Mac Pro Mavericks machine with local files — which at first made me think perhaps it was a hard drive issue. Usually the problem would show up when writing a lot of files quickly — such as using Automator to process image files. The new files won't appear in the finder window for a while, or the file dates won't update. Restarting Finder would cause the folders to update. That computer has also had an issue with occasionally treating internal hard drives as networked drives, no clue if these problems are related.

However, now my MacBook Pro has been upgraded to Yosemite it is exhibiting the same behavior with Finder not reliably refreshing the file counts in folders or changed folder sizes — force quit/relaunch of Finder of course fixes it. I have a suspicion my cloud back-up service's app may be a culprit for both machines' weirdness — as it does in effect function like a server (though I work with all my files locally, not off the cloud) — but I do find it odd that it worked in Mavericks on one machine just fine.

Right now I've been just living with it on both computers, but it is an annoyance.

I am having the same issue. It has happened several times the past few days on Mac Pro recently upgraded to Yosemite.

1) I could see the folder/file through an application's "Open" or "Save As" file navigator but could not see it in finder. After a force quit of Finder it appeared.

2) I created some files and added an alias to one of them on my desktop at home. Everything is mirrored via dropbox on my work machine. The Alias was on my desktop at work, but when I clicked it it could not find the original file. So I navigated to the file to re-point the Alias, and it was not there (or at least Finder was not displaying it). I force quit finder and the file appeared.

3) I use an IDE for the R statistical language that has a built in file manager. I had a folder that had been created by the IDE and clearly appeared in the IDE's file manager, but did not appear in Finder. I had someone walking by come in and verify that I was not losing my mind. 🙂

The next time it happens I will try to capture a video and post it here. It seems finder is not updating when files are created in a certain way (so far one was created by dropbox and one was created by an IDE.).

I have the same problem with a MacBook Pro Mavericks (10..9.5), started happing out of the blue a few weeks ago, I first noticed while using Sublime text that adding new file didn't display I then realized it was actually the finder not refreshing files, I found by deleting the .DS_Store file in the affected directory would make it display the files which is strange... I had a hard-drive replacement not long ago and have a WD Black drive which has been verified to have no problems and permissions fixed... I must say this is frustrating as I am programmer and create new files all the time! I hope someone can shed some light on this...

I'm working on a Mac Book Pro Retina, Mid 2014 and Yosemite 10.10.2. The Finder does not refresh with changes in file content. For example, if I create a new file using a program (e.g., a pdf using R and Sublime Text), the finder does not show it. If I use Spotlight to 'find' the pdf, it finds it and I open it, and then the Finder view shows the file.

If I change a file or replace a file, the modification date does not change (so I do not know whether the change worked!). If I refresh Finder (using the Force Quit ... Finder). Everything is updated.

This has been happening for over a month. I cannot say whether it was due to an update or something else. It took me a little while to realize the pervasiveness of the problem.
