New iPad2 has toxic smell like strong adhesive. What is it?

My new iPad2 has a toxic smell. My husband & I both got a severe headache from it. I have not even been able to set it up. It smells so very strong, not like a normal new electronic smell, but it like strong adhesive. I was so looking forward to using this, now I don't know what to do. The smell is unbearable and fills up the room. It is now in a bag in another room we don't use. I guess I will need to return it. I would like one that doesn't smell like this! What is this smell?

There are two probable causes for the smell.

1. The new gorilla-Glass screens are made from many layers of a glue-type material, giving them a lot more durability but also more possibilities to be defective during manufacture. Thus, if a layer does not dry properly, other problems ensue, but this would normally be accompanied by other physical defects.

2. Electrical components often smell like that when they overheat (eg. sitting in a 120˚ warehouse or something along those lines). Many times they do sit in poorly air-conditioned back rooms before making it to the shelf.

The cover smelled too of adhesive. I soaked in a bin with soap, and its OK. It may be the device which rubbed of on the cover. It does not have an electrical smell. It smells like strong scotch tape, or the bandages in a hospital that have latex. I can't bear the smell. It takes my breath away besides a bad headache.

Are you referring to an iPad Air 2? That was released in the later part of 2014. Otherwise, the iPad 2 is an older device, released in 2011. Was this a refurbished device? What happens if you enter the serial number into this link? https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do

You can also make an appointment at the Genius Bar of the nearest Apple store and have the device checked, to see if there is anything wrong with the hardware.

Okay, that helps, since your first post said iPad Air 2, which is an older device. How close is the nearest Apple Store? You can deal with Apple Care by phone if you like to see about sending the device in. Use this support document to get the numbers to contact Apple and start from there. Contact Apple for support and service - Apple Support Unless you want to try dealing with Best Buy. That is up to you. Is there a Best Buy store close to you? You might be able to take it there, even though you purchased it from their online store.
