Q: After updating, iPhone asks for original owners iCloud after I turned off Find My iPhone.

I recently bought a used iPhone 5 and I had the owner turn off Find My iPhone, log off iCloud, reset the phone and let me log into my iCloud account. I was logged onto it for about three weeks and it was connected to the Internet. The other day I was playing with it and noticed the compass wasn't working so I decided to restore the phone from 8.1.1 to 8.1.2. I reset the phone first and it removed my iCloud from the phone. I got an email confirming that it was taken off my account.

After the update was complete I went through the activation process and it told me I needed to log onto the previous owners account to continue. What gives? They removed it from their account and I was the last person to use Find My iPhone on the device. Why did it reactivate? I now have an expensive paper weight that I bought legitimately.

iPhone 5, iOS 8.1.2

You didn't restore it as new before you started using it.  If you had, then you would not have encountered Activation Lock or Transfer Purchase Authorization.  Now, is it showing the full Apple ID email address, or is it showing something like: 'a•••••@icloud.com'?

If it's the full Apple ID, then you (again) didn't restore it as new, because some of the previous owner's apps or media were on the device.

If it's the 'a•••••@icloud.com', then this is Activation Lock, and you didn't restore it as new properly at time of purchase.  If that's the case, then only the seller can remove it from Activation Lock: Find My iPhone Activation Lock: Removing a device from a previous owner’s account - Apple Support

Apple will not assist you if the previous owner cannot or will not remove it.  They may assist the previous owner with resetting a password to an Apple ID that they own, or the original purchaser can contact Apple to request Activation Lock be removed.

So, is it showing the whole Apple ID or just the abbreviated/censored version?

I was on the restore as new screen on iTunes. I had to put in my SIM card. All accounts were wiped previously according to this guide by Apple.

Also, I had content on the phone. I was signed to iCloud and iTunes and the phone was active under my account with Find My iPhone. No other account was present. If the phone was locked to another account it would have prevented me from signing in at all without removing the existing account. This shouldn't have happened.

    You never answered my question:

Is it showing the full Apple ID email address, or is it showing something like: 'a•••••@icloud.com'?
