how do i get music off an old ipod

I understand that you have music on your iPod that you would like to transfer into your iTunes library on your Mac.

If those songs you wish to transfer were purchased, there are two different ways you can accomplish this. The first way, which does not even require you connecting your iPod to the computer, would be to re-download them from iTunes in the Cloud directly to your iTunes library. Directly connecting your iPod to your Mac to transfer purchases is an option as well.
