Re: MacPro Crashing

Re: MacPro (early 2008); OSX 10.10.1; Processor 2x2.8 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM; Graphics ATI Radeon HD 2600XT 256 MB; two hard drives 1.5TB and 320GB.

To whom it concerns

My MacPro has bouts of crashing. In which case it produces, but not always, a panic crash report. This has occurred since I updated my operating system to Yosemite 10.10. On one occasion I activated a disk repair from diagnostics which eliminated the red text warning at the time.

Can the crash reports provide the data which itemizes the problem and what remedial action that I can undertake?

Does re-formatting the hard drive present a solution to some of these problems?

Look forward to a reply.

kernel panic, machine check, status 4 or 5, detected by multiple processors at once...

.. is a classic uncorrectable ECC Memory error.

If you were considering a memory upgrade, now is the time. Your memory is organized in pairs on the same Riser, largest pairs in the lowest numbered slots. Try for a rough balance on each riser, when possible.

This display can help you detect single-bit errors before they become double-bit errors that, by design, halt the machine to avoid poisoning your data:

320.07 GB

That is an old drive.

Same for the OEM ATI 2600XT

FBDIMMs are now made better and a whole lot cheaper, 2x2GB FBDIMM Mac Pro from Nemix on Amazon. Ideal is to use all 8 DIMM slots.

Once you have an SSD boot drive, and 4x2GB perhaps, then look for AMD 7xxx or something.

Samsung XP941 256GB $250 goes in PCIe slot, is the easiest to use and fastest SSD device that exists and works seamless (no driver or controller firmware etc to deal with, works in any Mac Pro and all versions of OS X.

Hi All, just to update you on this issue: I eventually consulted Apple's technicians 6 times. Twice at the end with their senior technicians. The diagnosis was that the problem was an unidentified third party and, inadvertently, I ended up with a double startup situation between the two hard drives. The solution - a complete erase and reformat of both hard disks. Obviously, I had to re-build and restore over 300K of photo files. An arduous task. The outcome - Its now running like a dream.

Subsequently, I had spoken to an independent Apple expert and he said earlier MacPros like mine are not really compatible with OSX 10. Sometimes I wished that I had just stayed with Snow Leopard.

Steve

PS - no charge from Apple for technical support. Thank f*** for that!

The 2008 has always been a temperamental child, unruly behavior and strange issues with power management and more. First 64-bit EFI some bugs in SMC (and firmware update while helped first batch, is never as good).

I bought a camera that had a top name to it, was guaranteed that it did not have to go through QA twice, no redo or replacement part of lens or any part, but the ones that did need to did not get the vendor's name on the camera and went out under a 2nd tier brand line. That is how I see most of the 2008s and definitely the first 4 months of units shipped.

A 2006 had a year in prototype testing and development before it saw light of day and as first Intel based Xeon workstation from Intel to Apple (Skulltrail platform) And it has been a solid problem free machine and can be assisted into running Yosemite even.

No, it is the old 2600XT for one that isn't compatible and OS X cannot offload and send some graphic load to the GPU. The 'system' is quite capable. I also think Apple stops testing for and providing firmware updates too soon and that the motherboard could probably benefit, but the "board" itself is not bad or at fault.

Look at the threads regarding USB3 problems, having "too many" controllers using four PCIe slots vying - whether firmware or other issues. And to those that criticize hacks, every PCIe card and firmware is itself "hack" of sorts with its driver and firmware. Two GTX cards, moving gpu to slot #2 to get it to work. SATA III and other cards. Yes a motherboard with native SATA III is better than having SATA II and adding III. Same for USB3. And even the nMP's USB3 has one bus controller for all USB devices = poor bandwidth and performance. So I am not sure where the perfect Mac workstation is that is "current" and has all the bells and whistles.

The 2008 FBDIMMs and heat. Apple Developer Doc and Memory guide called for waiting 10-15 minutes after shutdown to allow FBDIMMs to gradually cool and to avoid opening the side panel to prevent sudden shock of cool air onto FBDIMMs which is damaging and because they run very hot. Even Intel couldn't get beyond FBDIMMs fast enough, what with the high temps along with consuming 10--15 watts per DIMM the system might be using 80-120W just to power 8 DIMMs (some non-Apple systems had 16 DIMM dual Xeon and 4-socket servers with even more). In climate controlled environments. Apple had to issue 2006 model firmware so that it would check temperature sensors and on wake from sleep if too warm kick the fans into high gear to bring it down, which usually took just a minute or two.

Prevention is easier than the cure. Better to boost the fans first and keep temp down and from building up than to try to later after it got hot enough to then kick the fans into higher gear and expel heat much less efficiently. While in sleep or shutdown the insides and FBDIMMs actually allowed heat to build up without the fans to help.

And sometimes with fan issues, just by using SmcFanControl even once to write a new plist, and that is all it did but a valid set - and the SMC and fans were back to their normal (not ideal) behavior.

Some people bought a 2009 with multiple NVidia GT120s. BTO you could have four. But come to find out a later OS X dropped support for two Nvidia cards. Are we dropping support for Mac? for a configuration it was sold as? Did no one in the testing phase run into that? Users want to know.

A $800-1000 Apple Pro RAID card that is stuck in 2.2TB world as if this was Windows XP. Trouble formatting a 4TB drive fully (which was working in prior versions of the same OS release.

Yes some like or like to think that Snow Leopard was the ideal. Before Apple lost its way. I like Rosetta-less Lion feeling it is "cleaner" and does not yet have the taste of iOS-on-desktop (or iPad cross-platform coding and support).,

When we went for years with relatively small changes from 2006 to 2012, a new processor socket, a tweak in cpu MHz, a 5,1 (and 4,1 almost the same) for 4 years... stalled development, no DVD but also no Internet Recovery Install natively to take a bare system and get it up and running OS X.

And don't start on MacBook Pro Wifi and SATA III and other issues that began in 2011 (and SSD industry as a whole had trouble moving to 6G SATA III SSDs what with controllers and firmware issues all that year).

PC and tech industry knows how to shoot itself in the foot?
