iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)
oops...os should be otherway round...iMac is 10.10.1
You won't be able to use a hardware solution as your imac is too old and doesn't meet requirements Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - Apple Support
Screen Recycler may get you what you need http://www.screenrecycler.com/ScreenRecycler.html
THanks Mike. I assume from your reply that if i connected an lcd tv screen it would simply display the same image as the imac and not be a dual screen as such.
OOps...bit of finger trouble tonight. I still await your last comment
I don't know what happened! My answer is gone!
Anyway...if you connect a second display and open the Display preference pane you should see an "Arrangement" tab. Click that and you can drag the little white menu bar from one screen to the other to choose which one you want as the main screen. There will also be a box at the bottom of the window that you can check to Mirror the displays.
