Sorting by composer in iOS 8 broken

Am I the only one experiencing this ? The stock music app in iOS 8.1.2 doesn't take anymore into account the "Sort Composer" field for sorting, but seems to rely on "Composer" instead, even when both fields are set.

The net result being, for me, that the composers end up sorted by their firstnames.

This is a regression, it used to work as expected until recently (couldn't say when exactly)

It's even worse in iOS 8.2, as I've found that all songs with multiple composers sync as though the composer field is blank and don't appear at all on that particular screen.

I've populated all my composer fields. If a song has one composer then I sort as 'Last name, First name' and some of those have appeared on iOS 8.2 in the right place. However, on multi-composer songs, I sort those by surname only, separated by semicolons. Out of 4150 songs, 88 composer names are displayed and just three of those are multi-composer and are in the wrong place alphabetically. For instance, a Mumford & Sons song with the composer sort of "Dwayne; Lovett; Marshall; Mumford" appears under 'M', while one by The Rolling Stones sorted as "Jagger; Richards" is also under 'M'.

It worked fine before, but I have a theory that composer fields are only being displayed if they match what they say in the iTunes Store (which typically only displays the first composer if there is more than one and so is incorrect).

No you are not the only one. And it's still the same crap in iOS 9. Please Apple bring back the features of previous versions, bring back support for users who listen to classic music and want to sort by composer or type. This APP is so much oriented on current popular music linked to the group or artist it makes everything else unusable. In fact the same is true for all stuff oriented to music. It takes appart Jazz albums and on the other hand does not allow to easy group pieces on a Album into one item (e.g. you have several Quartetts on one CD and now you want to have each Quartett being selectable individually). The only option is playlists, but then you loose the ability to search by composer or by genre. Very bad APP.

Try this:

  • Go to the View menu > View Options… > on the pop-up menu on the right click "Show Columns" and make sure only the following are ticked:
    • Album
    • Artist
    • Disc Number
    • Genre
    • Time
    • Track Number
    • Year
  • iTunes should now be displaying all your music in a nice big list so open the iTunes window up as large as possible (click and drag the bottom right hand corner as desired).
  • NOTE: You can order the columns left to right as required simply by clicking and dragging on the heading of the column to the desired position. You can also expand or make the column width smaller by clicking and dragging on the right hand side of the column heading as desired.

  • Click to select any track in the main list at the bottom.
  • Go to the Edit menu > Select All.
  • Right (Control) click on any track and select "Convert ID3 Tags…" from the contextual menu. Tick "ID3 Tag Version" and select "v2.4" from the pop-up menu. Click OK. If you have a lot of tracks this may take some time.
  • NOTE: This converts the ID3 tag on any MP3 files you have to version 2.4. This allows the use of special tags like the "sorting" fields on them. However, some MP3 players e.g. non-Apple streaming devices, car MP3 players may require an older version of the ID3 tag so if you have such equipment check which ID3 tag version they support.
