When receiving a sync session timed out alert, I would recommend forcing all open applications to close, restart the device and restarting iTunes. Attempt the sync again after processing these steps.

1. iTunes
2. Apple Application Support
3. Apple Software Update
4. Apple mobile Device Support
Restart and then Reinstall iTunes 12 . This worked for me on windows 8 , 8.1 . Hope this helps.
