If you activated Find My iPhone prior to the loss, you can go on a computer and log into www.icloud.com/#find and see if you can see your device. If you cannot find the device that way, that is the only way it can be tracked. It requires that Find My iPhone was activated before the loss, the device needs to be powered on, and it has to have an active internet connection. If you cannot locate it, then you will have to do it the old fashioned way. Look for it.
