Boot the MBP into the recovery partition.
From the 4 option menu select Disk Utility.
Run Disk Utility>First Aid, Verify and Repair.
If the disk cannot be repaired, it will have to be replaced.
Ciao.

Jan 17, 2015 5:13 AM in response to OGELTHORPEby kerrylouise1912,Thank you for your help. I have managed to get to use the disk utility and 'disk0s2' needs to be repaired. But it can't repair the disk. It states I should back up as many of my files as possible, reformat the disk and restore backed-up files.
How is this possible?
Many thanks
Kerry

Jan 17, 2015 8:44 AM in response to kerrylouise1912by OGELTHORPE,I would install a new HDD, format it and install the OSX. Then I would connect the old HDD via USB and see if I can access the files that are on it.
If no success and if the data is important, look for recovery software on the Internet. Most have a trial that will tell you the possibilities for retrieving data but then you will have to pay for the software.
The last option is employing a professional data retrieval service. That will be expensive with no guarantee of results.
Ciao.
