    Hi dwdenning,

Welcome to the Support Communities!  If you are having trouble updating your Thunderbolt display software update, try the resolution offered below:

Thunderbolt Firmware Update 1.2: Keeps reappearing and Thunderbolt ports and Target Display Mode may not work - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203758

Thunderbolt Firmware Update 1.2: Keeps reappearing and Thunderbolt ports and Target Display Mode may not work

After installing Thunderbolt Firmware Update 1.2:

    • Thunderbolt ports may not work.
    • Target Display Mode may no longer work.
    • The update may keep reappearing as available for download.

This occurs when a self-powered Thunderbolt device (other than a directly-connected Thunderbolt display) is connected to a Thunderbolt port while installing the update.

    To resolve this issue:

    1. Shutdown your computer.
    2. Disconnect all Thunderbolt devices.
    3. Wait 10 seconds.
    4. If you are using a Mac mini with a Thunderbolt display, reconnect the Thunderbolt display directly to your computer via the Thunderbolt port. Do not connect other Thunderbolt devices at this time.
    5. Restart your computer.
    6. If the Thunderbolt Firmware Update 1.2 is offered, download and install it and restart your computer when asked. If the Thunderbolt Update is not offered, the update has installed correctly.
    7. Reconnect all Thunderbolt devices.

    Thanks Judy.

No joy. Laptop restarted OK. Thunderbolt screen black. Power cable through the thunderbolt is charging the laptop, so power (I assume this power source is a single one for the whole thunderbolt display).

How do i test the Thunderbolt display itself? I tried plugging in 2 other macs, one that used to work on this display and neither work.

It stopped working immediately after the Firmware attempted update. So I was using the using the Thunderbolt display in the morning, downloaded the update, and restatred the computer and it has not worked since.

    Hi David,

Is this the website that you downloaded the Firmware Update from?  If not, try again:

    Thunderbolt Display Firmware Update v1.2
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1775

This update improves reliability when connecting devices to the Apple Thunderbolt Display, and addresses a rare issue that may cause the display to go black.

If the download does not resolve the issue, your Thunderbolt display may need to be serviced.  Click on the link below for more information.

Tries to download the software, but even with the Thunderbolt cable connected, won't load as 'no Thunderbolt display' connected.

So clearly have to get it serviced.

Should never have downloaded or tried the update!
