Q: iPhoto upgrader does not work

After reinstalling Yosemite I had to reinstall iPhoto. I downloaded it again and was informed that I needed to upgrade the iPhoto library. I downloaded the iPhoto Library Upgrader and launched it from my utilities folder. After that, every time I try to launch iPhoto I get this:

When I click on the upgrade button an update dialog flashes with a progress bar for 1 sec and then iPhoto crashes.

When I go to Utilities and launch the upgrader tool I get this:

I have trashed iPhoto and the upgrader several times, and re downloaded them with the same result.

The pictures folder in my Finder is grayed out and I can't access my photos.

I have an older Mac which is out of Apple Care. Apple wants to charge me for support for this problem which is not a user error but obviously a defect in the software. I find this crazy. Is there anyone who can help me?

Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - from the resulting first aid window repair permissions and if necessary rebuild your database

This message only means that the iPhoto Library needs to be upgraded, but iPhoto can do that on its own, unless the library has been created by iPhoto '08 or earlier.

When iPhoto crashes during the upgrade your iPhoto library may have a corruption, you may be running out of diskspace, or similar.

What does the crash report show? Post the first 50 lines.

I followed the instructions from LarryHN and repaired permissions. When I tried to launch iPhoto with Alt-Command it no longer showed me the first aid window to repair the database. But when I just right-clicked the iPhoto app I was able to choose from 3 different databases - Pictures, and Library x 2. When I chose Library I was able to launch iPhoto successfully and I can see my photos and import from my iPhone. Thank You Larry!!
