I'm about to buy an iMac and am looking to put an old version of photoshop on it. How far back would be compatible EG Photoshop CS2?
Old version of photoshop compatible with new iMac?
Old version of photoshop compatible with new iMac?
See roaringapps.com for info that users have submitted about using older apps on Mac OS.
http://roaringapps.com/app/adobe-photoshop-cs2 (doesn't look promising!)
A new iMac will run Yosemite - 10.10, CS2 is very old it's time to update (or buy an older iMac).
check out this great website: http://roaringapps.com/app/adobe-photoshop-cs2
you can check every version of photoshop, with every version of os X.
it appears that CS2 doesn't work, and hasn't been compatible with the OS of the last 5 years.
Probably NOT.
All Adobe CS2 apps stopped working reliably or not at all at OS X 10.9 Mavericks.
I was lucky enough to find a full complete version of Adobe CS3 Design Suite that was, reasonably cheap.
Older, upgrade and full versions of Adobe apps are a lot more expensive to purchase now since Adobe switched to renting their software to users through an online subscription model which many design pros do not really like.
So, any Adobe CS2 will probably not work with newer OS X 10.10 Yosemite.
Adobe CS 3 apps work fine on both OS X 10.9 and 10.10.
As as a Photoshop alternative, you might want to look at Pixelmator
Thanks for the help.
So Adobe CS3 should be Ok?
Can you buy it 2nd hand - as a CD ?
I'm using Photoshop CS3 with Yosemite and it works very well. You will, however, have to install Apple's java after upgrading to Yosemite before PS will run. You can get it here: Java for OS X 2014-001
I don't know how much high powered editing you do with PS but the current Photoshop Elements for Mac can do about 75% of what PS can do and is quite a bit less expensive. The one thing it can't do that I use on rare occasion is to convert an image to CMYK color mode. However, there are other apps, like the demo version of GraphicConverter that can do that after you've done the editing with PSE.

Yes.
Not Cheap and you would have to contact the seller/s to make sure that the software has been deactivated and that the software comes with all of the needed registration and activation codes.
I bought this just before prices escalated on older versions because of Adobe's new rent-a-software, subscription model.
Older versions of Adobe apps are just ridiculously expensive, now as sellers are being greedy money grabbers because they know there are a lot of Adobe users who do not want to rent their software.
Adobe Photoshop Elements will be much cheaper than full blown PS and have about 75% of what full Photoshop has.
Pixelmator is even cheaper and also looks and works almost the same as Photoshop for half the price of PSE.
Just be aware that you can have weird issues with Adobe Updaters…

Other CS3 apps also have update issues (I gave up trying to update Illustrator 11 - too many hoops to jump through, updaters that fail), some fixes are security related too, so they are important to get installed.

Adobe have bizarre processes to update apps 🙂
Thanks for all the info.
I now understand why there's a dearth of copies of PS3 on sites like ebay.
Reviews of latest Pixelmator software sound encouraging and it is deemed to rival PSE.
I am an artist and make prints of my work, so the cmyk tools are needed. I'd hoped to do
more with PS layers on the new iMac.
Have seen copies of CS3 on ebay, from USA, at around £125, but what problems you'd
run into with an unregistered version I don't know.
Still deliberating - I don't use PS enough at present to warrant a big cash outlay.
Well,
If you are a NOT regular and expert Photoshop user, the you really do not need full Photoshop.
As has been stated you can use Photoshop Elements OR Pixelmator, then use LemkeSoft's Graphic Converter to do CMYK conversion.
Graphic Converter is not that expensive an app to add to your arsenal of Mac graphic/art tools.
These two graphics apps are still cheaper together than either an upgrade version of Photoshop CS3 OR much, MUCH cheaper than a full version of Photoshop.

Also, what type of digital art do you do? Do you work more with images or are you a digital painter?
You could look at Painter 5 Essentials or full version of Painter which is my painting app of choice which is a lot cheaper than newer versions of full Photoshop and has CMYK support and, also, has the ability to integrate images into its application and has layers, also.
It's pricey, but it is still cheaper than full versions of Photoshop.
You can look at these, as well and give yourself some other options.

I don't think you can use unregistered versions of CS3, you need a valid serial to use it.
Adobe did turn off CS2 validation servers that led to many assuming that CS2 is now free, but I can't see any statement from Adobe declaring that as fact!
I have CS3, Photoshop is fine on 10.9, but I haven't tried it properly on 10.10. Other apps have the update issues, but they do work.
There are CS3 trials around for you to test it on 10.10, but they may be bundled with other malware/ adware/ junk since Adobe is not hosting them. I would setup another OS on an external disk to try them, don't connect any important disks either (eject the internal OS disk too just out of paranoia).
It may be simpler to plump for the CC rental fee and cancel it in months when you have other things to do 🙂
I loathe having to rent any software.

Sometimes it's really nice to just use great software for a month or so.
I was pleased to rent http://figure53.com/qlab/ for a show, but if the sign up & cancel process are difficult I can understand why it would be avoided. So long as you data can be kept or exported, I can't see the point of avoiding progress. The budget wouldn't have stretched to a full licence & it hasn't been needed since.
I work as an illustrator and portraitist, using traditional tools.I use PS [ I have CS1 ] for photo and artwork colour correction, printing my own work, and hope to do more collage style work with photos and drawing using layers etc- straightforward manipulation of imagery as you used to do with cut and paste. I'm not likely to be trying any sophisticated technical work.
Looking at latest Pixelmator, it may be enough for my needs.
Photoshop does this, as wel.
If you are in layer mode and using Photoshop's direct selection tool, if you have images or work on multiple layers, in direct selection tool mode, you can click anywhere in an image and if that part of the image is on a layer, when you click on it, Photoshop automatically finds and bring you to that layer and makes it the current layer.
You DO NOT have to hunt through a long layers list to the find the layer a part of an image lies on.
