TextEdit not launching in Yosemite upload

I have a mid-2011 iMac with a 10.10.1 Yosemite upgrade. My TextEdit app in the dock will not launch, either from the Dock, or from Launchpad, or from the Applications Folder: I always receive a message that says TextEdit is not "responding." I've even found a document that is saved within TextEdit but, again, it won't open because TextEdit itself is not responding. (I'm addressing this question to the Mountain Lion community because I couldn't find a Yosemite community, and I chose the Installation and Setup category because that seemed most apt ... even if TestEdit does appear to be installed already, just not launchable.)

Any ideas? Thank you.

Thank you, Japib. I was leery about reinstalling the OS (I'd had a bit of trouble installing it the first time, plus there was the time spent). So before doing an entire reinstallation I simply tried to Restart the computer –– only to find that I couldn't do that either, couldn't close and Restart the computer because the TextEdit app was still open (although in fact it wasn't really open). I had some trouble force-quitting it and wound up Logging Out entirely –– which I was able to do –– and then logging in again ... at which point TextEdit became functional again. It's OK now, why I don't know.

Thanks for the help, it nudged me along the way.
