after syncing a folder of images to an iPad Air for editing the trash can icon is greyed out ... The idea is to view them on the iPad and make selections to delete ... If an image is edited and saved it can then be deleted ... Am I missing something ?

DDid you sync the photos with itunes? Then you can only delete them from the iPad by syncing again and not including the photos you want to remove from the ipad. Synced photos cannot be deleted directly on the device.
that's rather silly...
the work around is to share images to iCloud and then download them to the iPad...that enables editing to be done on the iPad...
