laserwriter 8500 with Yosemite? ppd?

I am trying to get my old Laserwriter 8500 to work nicely with Yosemite. My current situation is that I (finally) have communications established* but am not able to make good use of the multipurpose feeder to print on large paper (13x20) since Apple (grrrrr) doesn't provide software for the 8500 in its list of available printers when adding a printer. I'm using the "Generic PostScript Printer", which works to print letter size from the tray, but I need to use the multipurpose and large paper in booklet format.

Yes - could get a more recent printer, but this thing cost me 2 grand back in the day and still works fine, AND prints 13x20" (! which I need). Life expectancy is 180,000 sheets and I'm only at 40,000.

Thanks for any suggestion!

David

* In case of use to anyone else, a summary of my communications issues. Probably obvious to many, but not to me, so...

I had kept around an old PowerPC running system 9 to be able to run the Apple Printer Utility to talk to the 8500 and change settings. Alas, that old desktop finally dies (blinking ? on startup).

Spent a long time trying to access the 8500 through Terminal (Telnet), and was finally successful. I could print test page showing current IP address etc. by using paper clip in small hole above the ports on back. Initially, Ping and Telnet from Terminal would not find anything. I was also messing around with different ethernet cord configuration with my hub. What ended up working was, turning the 8500 OFF, hooking Ethernet cord directly from iMac to the 8500, turning ON the 8500 - then Ping and Telnet to the test page IP address worked, and I was able to change the setting via telnet (based on my routers default gateway of 10.0.0.1) to:

IP address: 10.0.0.150 (150 chosen at random, presumably out of the way of various other devices)

Subnet mask: 255:255:255:0

Default gateway: 10.0.0.1

The PPD was included at least through OS X 10.7. If you have access to an older system you can grab the PPD from /System/Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources. You can also find it available for download from Apple. The problem with that download is that you need to mount an old .smi image.

If neither of those options are doable for you, let us know and I, or someone else can find a way to get it to you.

Hi gang,

I have a similar problem. My Laserwriter 8500 is a complete beast and I can't give up on it. I have a cheesegrater MacPro connected directly to the LW using it's second Ethernet 2 socket. Is it possible to use it this way? In which case, what should the settings be in the network system prefs for Ethernet 2 to let the MP see the LW? I know the IP of the LW which is 192.168.0.100 and I used to have it connected to the router and setup in OSX as an IP printer which worked fine but due to my setup I now need to connect it directly to the MP and share it on the network from there if at all possible.

Any ideas?

Thanks
