Open Box MacBook Pro Retina 15" DG

Hello Everyone,

I was planning to buy new macbook pro 15" and I had my mind set on MacBook Pro Retina 15" DG 2.5GHz i7 version ($2499.00). But BestBuy had the same computer in open box (which they said is just a returned piece) and they were willing to give it to me for $1999.00. I jumped on the chance to save $500 on MacBook Pro. But I want to make sure that I did not get a lemon piece. I want to basically benchmark the performance of my new machine.

The reason I want to do is, I am having doubts on performance of this macbook. I have early 2011 macbook pro and I do not see huge jump in performance of this machine. Secondly, when I go to About this Mac screen and try to switch between different tabs, I see the transition is not really smooth. It looks like the frames are dropping and it is really choppy.

Can someone please help me make sure this Open Box deal that I took to save $500 is not a bad deal? I do not mind paying extra $500, as I was already prepared to do so, but only a fool would want to spend extra $500 in my opinion.

Thank you...

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

If the MBP is functioning as designed, a $500 savings is a good deal. An open box from Bestbuy means that some other person purchased it and returned it. The reasons for that return are unknown. When using resource intensive applications, the retina should be able to outperform your 2011 MBP. In ordinary operation, text edit, e-mails, casual Internet browsing etc. there will be little difference.

When you say " I see the transition is not really smooth. It looks like the frames are dropping and it is really choppy.", that I see as a bad sign. I would have the MBP checked out by an Apple store where the technicians are trained by Apple to work on Apple equipment. Based on what they find, then I would make a decision regarding a return or not.

Ciao.
