Whats the correct way to maintain battery life through charging?

I have looked for a clear answer but there are three completely different ones that i've narrowed it down to.

1) Some people are saying that you should let your iphone drop below 20% and then charge it to 100%

2) Others are saying that you should charge your phone whenever possible, so always having it topped up

3) Lastly, they're saying you should always charge your phone when it gets to around 40% and then charge to over 80%

All i want to know is whats the best way to charge an IPhone, in order to maintain and preserve a healthy battery.

I am using an IPhone 6 64gb.

IOS 8.1.2

iPhone 6, iOS 8.1.2

I concur with Chris, but also I'd add don't worry too much if you occasionally forget to charge it before it gets to 20% or 10%. It will have an effect on overall battery life, but such a small effect that you'd have to actually do multiple controlled tests to notice a difference. And the time you spent making those controlled tests to see if letting it drop below 20% occasionally actually caused a problem, that would end up being more time than you've actually lost on the overall battery life. I.E., you'd end up spending 20 hours doing the tests over time, but you'd actually only have recorded a loss of about 2-5 hours in the entire life of the device. (8760 hours in a year, so it's a negligible percentage).

In short, don't worry about it. Your'e going to use your device the way you want to use it. If you want to baby it and barely use it, fine. But that's like owning a car and only ever driving it for an hour or two on Sundays. It's a waste of a good car.

Everything you buy will eventually need to be replaced. I don't see a good reason to worry about the little niggling details instead of just using and enjoying the device.

Charge it when convenient. Ideally, charge overnight every night. So it will have a full charge for the next day. You cannot overcharge an iPhone; the charging circuit in the phone stops charging at 100%. Don't let it get too low, but the reason has nothing to do with the battery itself; its simply that those last 20% disappear very quickly and you are likely to be left with a dead phone. There is no harm in using it until it shuts off. The reason: Zero is not zero; it reads zero and shuts off with plenty of charge left to preserve memory, and to prevent the battery from becoming fully discharged. Likewise, 100% is not the full capacity of the battery; the charger leaves a safety margin to prevent accidental overcharging.
