Cannot sync epub content downloaded to iBooks on Mac with iPad

I use my iPad as my ebook reader. I sometimes download epub files on my Mac and open with iBooks. Files purchased through iTunes/iBooks sync with the iPad library as they are supposed to. Sync options allow for syncing FROM the iPad to the Mac, but not vice versa. How do I get these non-purchased files into the iBooks library on the iPad?

I am running the latest OS on both the iPad 2 and the Mac.

Thanks.

I definitely have the same problems. 8 books in my mac and 0 books synced to my iphone.

I think the problem is about how to seamlessly put my downloaded epub files to my mac ibook and then sync it to my iphone ibook.

Sure the email thing works, but its quite a chore to do that if you have a lot of books.

Also, will the pages sync between the devices using this method?

Let me know if you've found any other alternatives

Cheers

As I said, those sync functions only operate one way, FROM the iPad to the Mac. I don't know of any way to open the files directly on the iPad, since they are a zipped download that opens as a number of formats, either an epub or pdf. I can open them in iBooks to the Library on the Mac, but if the object is to store and read my ebook collection on the iPad, it doesn't help me. Reading a 300 page book on a computer screen is neither convenient nor comfortable. None of the other ebook apps (Kobo, Kindle) work either.

No, that screen is for syncing content from the computer to the device (similarly the Apps, Music screens allow you to sync apps, music etc from your iTunes library to your iPad). The screen should show the ibooks, epubs and PDFs that you have in the iBooks app on your Mac, and lets you select and sync them to the iBooks app on your iPad.

What do you see when you select that screen ? You should see something like :

User uploaded file

With a grid of your books and PDFs which you can tick/untick and then apply/sync to your iPad.

To copy items from your iPad you can use the File > Devices > Transfer Purchases, that will copy any iTunes purchases over from it, as well as any epubs and/or PDFs that are in the iBooks app - and you can then do File > Move Books From iTunes in the iBooks app on your Mac to move them over to that.

There are 168 titles on my iPad (approx. 175 on the Mac... there is no count), and only a fraction of those appear on the Sync screen you are referring to (and none of the titles that I want to transfer to the iPad). The warning tells me that if I attempt to transfer the 18 titles on the Sync screen to the iPad, I will remove the 168 titles in the iPad Library. Not what I had in mind, and doesn't include the titles from the Mac that are missing.

The File > Devices > Transfer Purchases menu option in iTunes should copy over anything from the iBooks app on your iPad (including epubs and PDFs, not just actual ibooks), as well as any other iTunes purchases, over to your computer that aren't already on it. And then in the iBooks app on your Mac the File > Move Books From iTunes should move them over to that.

By selecting the 18 books you are telling iTunes to replace what you currently have in the iBooks app on your iPad with those 18 books - if you want the existing books that are on the iPad to remain on it then you will have to select and include them in the sync. All the books/epubs/PDFs that I have in the iBooks app on my Mac show on the screen for selecting.

If you don't want to use iTunes you can email them to yourself and use 'open in' in the Mail app on your iPad to copy them to its iBooks app. The contents of the iBooks app on your Mac are stored under /Users/username/Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/iBoo ks (replacing username)

i had this problem I'm gonna try my best to explain it

i noticed my pubs were coming out under my recently added playlist but i couldn't sync it to my iPhone

so i created a smart playlist with the rules of bit rate > is less than > 128kbps

than i created a second rule of media kind > is not > music

from there all my books came up so all i did was change the GENRE of my epubs into book

i was able to than sync all my epubs
