Disconnect your iPad if you haven't already done so. Quit iTunes and restart your computer. Reboot your iPad and then try again, use another USB port on your computer.

Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

The the first thing that I always try when I have any issues connecting my iPad to my MacBook Pro is to eject my iPad, quit iTunes, reboot the Mac, reset the iPad and then try again.

Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears on the screen. Let go of the buttons and let the iPad start up. No data is lost when you reset an iOS device.

After doing all of that, try connecting again.
