How do I change my game center username? I can't change it when I try to it it just won't change

Using Game Center on your Mac or iOS device - Apple Support

Specifically -

Change your Game Center settings

View your profile to add email addresses, edit account info, and change privacy settings.

• iOS: Go to Settings and tap Game Center. You might have to sign in with your Apple ID.
• OS X: Go to the Me tab and click Account > View Account.

I have an issue where I will tap the nickname to change it. It asks for my apple password and I'll type it in correctly and then the chat box disappears and doesn't let me change anything. The only thing it allows me to do is log out but it won't let me change my name. I tried restarting my phone and it still doesn't work.
