Have you in some way made the fn key work as a modifier. Check out this document from Apple. I have to assume you haven't exposed the keyboard to water or dampness.
And please update your profile to describe exactly what you have. iMacs do not use iOS 8.1.2, only OS versions. It makes it difficult to answer questions because different systems sometimes require different answers for the same question.
Thank you Seventy One
My apologies I have Yosemite 10.10.1 installed on a 27inch Imac
I am not aware of making the fn key work as a modifier, can it be done by accident? I have been away for 4 weeks and this is the first time the unit has been used since returning. It functioned ok before.
Although away for a time my office has not as far as I'm aware suffered any dampness or adverse climate conditions.
As I don't have Yosemite, I cannot guide you precisely but if you have the facility to repair permissions, I would do that. I am not sure if it could be done accidentally. Does anyone else have access to your machine?
Don't forget to rethink your profile entry.
