Are you running Office 2011 Version 14.4.7? This is the latest version. If you are you may need to reinstall Office.

Hi thanks for your reply - I seem to have posted my question twice! I've taken off Trusteer and MacKeeper. I'm going to try to update the Office for Mac software and see if I can get it to open. I'll post the result.

I've updated Office for Mac 2011 to 4.4.7 after removing Trusteer and Mackeeper. I was able open an start Word and Excel no problems. I have reinstalled Trusteer and MacKeeper and all are working. I think Mackeeper may have prevented the updating of Office and I shall keep an eye on this in future. Thanks for your help.

I have three suggestions in addition to getting rid of Trusteer Rapport and MacKeeper. Be sure you followed their respective uninstallation instructions. Do not attempt to uninstall them any other way.

You disabled an essential component designed to protect your Mac from malware. Re-enable it: OS X: About Gatekeeper - Apple Support
Update OS X. The version installed is over six months old. OS X Mavericks: Install, update, and uninstall apps
2 GB memory is barely adequate for any recent Mac, let alone Microsoft's bloatware. For acceptable performance, 4 GB should be considered a more realistic minimum. Your Mac can address as much as much as 6 GB.

Other than Apple there are only two vendors with which I have personal experience and can recommend: Crucial and OWC. People have reported problems with many other brands, yet Crucial and OWC's prices are as good as any you are likely to find.

Go to Crucial and download the little app that examines your system and recommends RAM upgrade options.

Their prices are good but don't have to buy memory from them - determine what you need and buy it from Crucial or OWC / MacSales.

Hi John

Gatekeeper is now enabled - able to download apps from Apple and known developers. So now I cannot use Crucial's app to examine my system 😀 - still, I'll work round that. Thanks for the advice, I'm looking at extra RAM.

I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a machine supposedly limited to 4 GB.

To open a program from an unidentified developer, read the section of Apple's document under "How to open an app from a unidentified developer and exempt it from Gatekeeper".

Gatekeeper's purpose is to give you more control over what you install so that you can fully appreciate the consequences of doing so. "Anywhere" bypasses it completely, removing this essential security feature. It's still quite possible to install anything you desire, including junk (MacKeeper is one example); you just have to work a bit harder at it.
