Q: My 2007 MacBook has its fan running all the time!

My 2007 MacBook works fine but lately its fan has been running constantly. The noise is annoying. I have tried most of the things suggested on various forums like resetting P-Ram etc etc. The etrecheck report is as follows:

Problem description:

Fan Constantly on!

Try a SMC reset. The article covers when this is required, but doing this will not affect anything.

Thank you Eric. I have reset SMC several times in the past few weeks. It doesn't help.

I suspect that some process or program in the background is hogging resources causing fan to run constantly. I am not able to identify what could that be. That's why I posted the EtreCheck report so that one of you experts could look at it and tell me which one could be the culprit and how to remove it.

    Thanks!

    Try a restart.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

You have much communications software installed (RIM, NOVATEL, HUAWEI, VIRGIN MOBILE).  Rid those you are not using.  Delete Little Snitch as well.

Open the Macbook and see if there is dust an debris inside and if so clean it out.  That may a contributing cause to your fan problem.

Run an Apple Hardware Test.  That may provide a clue.

Open Activity Monitor to ALL PROCESSES and set CPU to display values from high to low.  Look for applications that are taking a lot of resources.

    Thank you Oglethorpe.

Ran Hardware Test - All normal.

Before swapping my old hard drive for the new one, I had removed the rear cover and used compressed air (gently) to blow out dust from the board and the fan. There was some dust not a lot. It did make the fan come on a few minutes later but once the fan comes on, it pretty much stays on until I put the mac to sleep.

I have removed all of the communication software (I clicked on - on the Network preference pain to remove those connection. Do I have to remove software some other way as well?).

I new EtreCheck report is as follows:

When you want to remove a third party application, you should first check with the developer to see if there is an uninstaller or specific uninstall instructions.  Merely dragging the app to Trash may not be sufficient.

You still have Little Snitch and more communications software than necessary unless you are using more than one ISP.

    Ciao.
