MacBook pro turns on and trust to reset password

Hi. I just inherrited my sister's 2010 MacBook pro. I've had it about a week now and it was all great, but the the computer started to get slow and skippy. So I decided to try to restart my computer. When I did, I no longer heard the fans running and it would not turn on. It was last at a 64% charge when I tried to restart. Later it booted up and it said that "if you are having trouble logging in, please change your password", this was the ONLY option. There was no exit, NOTHING. I went ahead and changed the password and it said it would have to restart again. Sure enough it restarted again and there it came up, THE EXACT SAME WINDOW. AS if what I did never happened. Again, this is the only option that shows up on the computer. I really don't want to have to give up on this computer. I tried doing the control, command and power button for 3 seconds, Nothing happened. I am no longer under the apple warranty, and my family doesn't believe it is worth the money to fix it with a professional. Please I am begging and losing hope, I cannot afford a new computer from apple and I like the features on this specific laptop. I am open to ANY and ALL suggestions. Thank you for your time. I hope I can fix this myself.

First thing to try is to boot to Recovery mode, run Disk Utility and Repair Disk.

1. Restart the computer while holding down the Command and R keys.

2. Select Disk Utility on the screen that comes up and Continue.

3. In DU, select your hard drive on the left, First Aid in the top and Repair Disk.

4. When this is done, quit DU and restart the computer.

Try this:

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive

Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.

When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.

Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Note also that all the App Store software on the computer belongs to your sister and is permanently tied to her Apple ID and password. Without it you cannot update or reinstall any of that software. This includes OS X. You may find that you cannot reinstall per the above for that reason. In this case you will need to original installer discs that came with the computer so you can completely erase the drive and start from scratch.

Clean Install of Snow Leopard

1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came

with your computer. Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.

After the chime press and hold down the "C" key. Release the key when you see

a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.

2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue

button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.

After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive

size.) Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Set the number of

partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button

and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended

(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.

3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed

with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.

4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup

Assistant. After you finish Setup Assistant will complete the installation after which

you will be running a fresh install of OS X. You can now begin the update process

by opening Software Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your

installation current.

Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. You may access the App Store using your Apple ID in order to download the OS X upgrade to Yosemite (free) and purchase your own software using your Apple ID. This will require you have your own App Store account. It is possible to set up a "free" or "no credit card" account. Read these instructions carefully before creating your account: Creating an iTunes Store, App Store, iBooks Store, and Mac App Store account without a credit card.
