iPod Nano will not connect to iTunes

iPad nano (generation 2 I believe -Model No.A1199) will no longer show up in iTunes to add more music. iTunes (Version 12.0.1) and MacBook Pro (Version 10,9,5 have the latest versions. iPhone 5 will sync but I do not want to put the music on there but on the iPod. iPod is charging when attached to the computer but I am unable to find it in devices within iTunes.
