Check to see if the internal microphone on your iMac is on. Open Facetime and click on 'Video' in the menu bar. The internal microphone should be checked.

I have been having issues with Facetime over the last few weeks. One thing I noticed when people could not hear me was for some reason when I opened Facetime it would default to another setting other than the internal microphone. Now I am having other problems where it is not working at all for either video or audio calls. I see in other Support Communities posts I am not alone. I believe it might be a bug that Apple needs to fix.

I had the same problem on my brand new iMac and Apple Care solved it for me. Very simple.

1. Restart your computer

2. As soon as you hear the chime, press the SHIFT button until you see the Apple logo, then release it. This will put your computer into safe mode. When your computer boots up to the home screen in safe mode, Facetime will NOT work. That's normal.

3. After your computer finishes booting up to your home screen, restart it normally. That solved the problem for me.

Apple Care said that putting the computer into safe mode results in a diagnostics check that can fix certain problems. I hope this helps someone else.
