Q: please help, lost everything

My son did something to my ipod touch. On the screen it says connect to itunes, which I did, now ive lost absolutely everything, songs, games, photos. No backup. Now I cant download anything as it says I need to upgrade to a ios 5? I have tried everything and am my wits end, please help

Which iPod touch model have you?

If you don't have a backup then there's noting you can do to restore.
You can re-download stuff that you've purchased in
App Store app > Updates > Purchased > here
iTunes Store app > More... > Purchased > here

You restored your iPod. What is it that you need now?

If you failed to backup your content, then it is gone, unless you redownload from Purchased under quick Links

I'm trying to download more games for my son in the app store, but it won't let me, it says I have to upgrade to ios 5, not sure how to do that? have gone into itunes, summary, check for update, but says no updates available, I have 4.2.1 the latest? I have downloaded games off there before

You can update your iPod touch 4th gen. to IOS 6.1.6.
Connect iPod to computer iTunes and update from there.
Resolve iOS update and restore errors in iTunes - Apple Support

I really appreciate your help ckuan, I wont let me upgrade to 6.1.6, it says thats the latest version for my ipod 4.2.1 sooo frustrated

It looks like you have a second generation iPod touch.

That model is quite old and can only go to 4.2.1
