Hey, I'm looking to purchase a slightly older MacBook pro, md212ll/a(late 2012) vs me864ll/a(late 2013)
Which one should I purchase and why? I will be choosing 4gb on board ram for me864ll/a
yes, the me864ll/a is newer than md212ll/a by a year but the md212ll/a comes standard with 8gb onboard ram and a slightly faster processor(2.5gb vs the me864ll/a 2.4gb)

You might get more meaningful responses if you indicated what are your prime intended uses for the MBP.
If you are enamored with the retina display, choose that model. Note that RAM and storage cannot be changed on that unit.
The non retina does afford the flexibility to install more RAM and larger capacity storage plus the internal DVD drive.

Based on the general requirements that you have described I would suggest that you look at a Macbook Air. These are most portable Mac's made with excellent battery run time making it near perfect for college.
SSD storage mitigates the need for large amounts of RAM. For your needs, 8 GB RAM is not essential so I would make the selection on the basis of the impact on the bank account. To complicate matters a touch, a newer model will have a higher resale value should that situation arise.
