Rapid Battery Drain w/ Yosemite Update

Hi,

I have a Macbook Pro and I recent updated to Yosemite. Prior to the update my battery lasted over seven hours. Now the battery drains at the rate of 1% per minute. I had a genius appt, but they said there was nothing they could do considering my battery was in good condition and there weren't any weird apps using a lot of energy when they checked out the Activity Monitor. I read online that reverting back to Mavericks may help, so I did and my battery is still draining at the same rate. Does anyone have any suggestions to get battery life back to what it used to be?

Thank you!

MacBook Pro (15-inch 2.53 GHz), OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

Uninstall Symantec according to its instructions. One or more of the following should be applicable:

Uninstall Norton Internet Security for Mac

Removing Symantec programs for Macintosh by using the RemoveSymantecMacFiles removal utility

RemoveSymantecMacFiles

Be sure to back up your Mac before making any changes to your system. To learn how to use Time Machine read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac.

Although I monitor the other thread regarding unacceptable battery life with Yosemite on occasion, I no longer have any desire to contribute to it because most of its participants are simply unwilling to provide even the slightest information that would help diagnose what's wrong. They'd just rather complain, which accomplishes exactly nothing, despite often literally pleading with them to provide additional detail. The fact is that all my portable Macs are enjoying much greater battery life with Yosemite - much more, even older ones. I now typically recharge once every couple of days whereas daily charging was a requirement under Mavericks.

Logically, it stands to reason everyone could be enjoying the same improvement, if they were only willing to actively participate in solving their own problems. This obstinance seems to be a fairly common trait among certain people, for reasons I cannot explain and frankly have no interest in understanding.

Hopefully eradicating the Symantec garbage will result in an improvement for you. The Apple Geniuses should have noticed its presence and erred in not recommending its removal. Google Chrome is a notorious resource hog, so are Microsoft's products, but that's nothing new. There is no indication anything else is wrong.

Would an SMC Resethelp?

Yes! Couldn't hurt.

Follow this procedure, excerpted from the link above. Read all the steps.

Before Resetting the SMC

Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.

  1. Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
  2. Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
  3. Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
  4. Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.

Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if it's not already connected.
  3. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time. The power adapter indicator light may cycle off / on once.
  4. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
  5. Press the power button to turn on the computer.

It's also possible the rapid battery depletion might be due to Spotlight indexing, which will be a factor immediately subsequent to an OS X installation or upgrade, and can remain so for a few hours. Give it a day or two before drawing any conclusions. There are additional troubleshooting steps if this doesn't help.
