Apps won't open when I've downloaded them from the internet.

Hello,

I have a Macbook Air and for the past few weeks whenever I download apps from the internet, they will not open. I download them and the installer comes up and then I install it but when I go to my applications folder and open it the window pops up that asks if I want to open an application that was downloaded from the internet. I click open and the app disappears. The icon in the dock bounces and then disappears and the application disappears from my application folder all together. I'm not sure how this could be happening but I really need help. Thank you!

MacBook Air, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

I did try that but it didn't work. I also had already had it set to allow downloads from anywhere. The specific app I am trying to download right now is Skype and I have to open the installer every time I try to open it because when I try to open it, the icon shows up in the dock and then disappears and the app in my applications folder is also deleted at the same time.

Go to your Applications folder where you have installed these applications that will not open. Right-click, or two-finger tap (if enabled) the application icon. Choose open, and the application will launch. This is a one-time deal, as afterwards, that specific application will launch normally.

This is an Apple security mechanism. You can override this in System Preferences > General: Allow apps downloaded from: Anywhere. However, it is not set to Anywhere to protect you, and even I do not leave Anywhere permanently enabled. Only for those apps that I know are not in the App Store, and already know have this open behavior.
