I have a Macbook 2010 OS X 10.9.5. I have recently changed my default browser to Chrome and I find that I now don't have the spell-checker that I used to have with Safari. how do I switch on the automatic spell-checker on my Mac with Chrome?

So this spell check was within the browser itself? In Google?
So meaning you would just type something in and the browser would autocorrect your typing?
Crome already does that when I'm Googling something. (Actually the most searched item in Google is people looking for the correct spelling of something!)
It tries to guess what I'm searching for based on a algorithm of what everyone in the English language is searching for when they type that series of letters.
It even guesses right if I miss the correct first letter.
Hi Spudnuty: I suppose the spell-checker was in Safari browser, because now I am using Chrome, my Gmail account no longer corrects mistakes (not in this message either, I have to correct my own), nor in my on-line diary account. So do you have any suggestion how to set up spell-checker in the MacBook? Thanks, Josephine
Thanks for your response but that's not the solution. At the bottom of the Chrome page, it says "if you have a Mac, you have to set spell-check up on your Mac". So I guess I'll phone Apple support and ask what they can suggest. Thanks.

Good idea, I went to Chrome settings and checkded the box for Use web to enable spelling . . . . . . . something like that, and I thought that would solve the problem but it didn't. So I have decided to go back to using Safari as my default browser. Thank you for your help.
