LaCie thunderbolt won't sleep on Mac Mini 2014

Hello,

When my external LaCie 2Big 12 TB thunderbolt external drive is connected to my new Mac Mini the system isn't going into sleep mode and the LaCie keeps spinning all the time (and getting quite warm in the end).

I tried to solve this by running the disk utility program and to change settings in theenergy settings but it won't help.

PS: I use the Mac Mini as a server for file sharing and to host the iTunes media file.

Hi Triphonius,

I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with your Mac Mini. It sounds like you have been on the right track in your troubleshooting. If you are having issues with your computer and/or your external hard drive not going to sleep as expected, you may want to double-check your Energy Saver settings, as detailed in the following article. In particular, you would want to make sure that the "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" and "wake for network access" is selected (Note: if you are using it as a server, it may not sleep due to continous network access). You may also want to test the Sleep function by seeing if it will allow you to manually (immediately) put your system to sleep from the Apple menu.

Thanks for the reply Brenden,

Strange enough it is possible to put the Mac mini + Lacie thunderbolt drive manually to sleep, but I automatically it won't work and both devices stay awake.

I tried everything, with all applications (including OS X server) shut down and the network cable and wifi turned off.

The only way the computer is going to sleep is in safe mode and manually.

I hope you can help, it's an annoying problem.

Kind regards, Michiel
