The pre-2006 iMacs this forum covers do not support Target Display Mode. This Apple article shows the iMac models that do offer such support:

Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - Apple Support

My 2010 iMac (pre-ThunderBolt with Mini-dispaly) connects nicely to my ThunderBolt=equipped MacBook Pro with a standard Mini DisplayPort cable. ThunderBolt connections have the same form factor and pins as mini-displayport.

If your iMac is newer than 2005---i.e., shows having an Intel processor when you do "About this Mac"---please let us know and we can ask the forums Hosts to move you the the more active forum for newer iMac models
