I have some troubleshooting steps that may be useful for your issue with Motion -
Motion 5.1: Troubleshooting basics - Apple Support
In particular I would suggest steps -
5. Make sure you're using a media format supported for use with Motion 5
7. Isolate the issue by testing with another user account
8. Test with media that is known to work and
9. Reset Motion 5 preferences (in OS X Mavericks)
