how can Open Office spreadsheets be converted to Numbers for Macs

Now that I have Numbers on my MacBook Pro, I'd like to convert existing "Open Office" spreadsheets into Numbers. Is there a way to do this?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8)

One way is to open the spreadsheet in Open Office and use the File menu Save As to save it to an Excel format that Numbers will open. If you have many, hopefully someone will have a better way as that is time consuming. I can't help but to also ask if you are sure -- I tried switching from Open Office to Numbers and put up with Numbers for over a year before I finally gave up and put in the effort to switch to Libre Office. I'm not a heavy spreadsheet user but Numbers for me was more negative than positive.
