Why do I need a new version of Numbers to open an existing spreadsheet?
iMac
You don't, but the Yosemite version will not open the older document as is. See iWork for Mac- Importing and exporting iWork '09 documents.
I don't have Yosemite:) I'm still on Lion and when I try to open a spreadsheet from a month ago it keeps telling me I need a newer version but I don't know why I need a new version with Lion?
Were you using Lion when you made the spreadsheet?
Yup!
There may have been an update to the existing Numbers, if so one would think
the prompt to update the same version to a later step would have appeared, or
if available would perhaps appear as a free update to the version, if a patch, etc.
The Software Update application may show it, or generally go to Mac App Store.
Would 'repair disk permissions' help, especially if the Numbers application is not in
need of update to open an older project or document? Hard to determine a cause.
In any event, it sounds a bit odd to me.
Good luck & happy computing! 🙂
I'm not sure how I did it but I managed to open it!
Thanks for your suggestion anyway.
Thanks but I managed to open it somehow!
