Q: iMac making a sound when I wake it up from sleep.

Recently my iMac (2012, running Yosemite) has started making a sound when I wake it up from sleep.  How can I make it stop?

iMac (27-inch, Late 2012), iOS 8.1.2

What sound is it and how long does it last?

It isn't any of the system sounds that are in the "Sound" area of System Preferences.  I don't see any way to attach a sound file to this.  It lasts about a second.  It's high pitched and rises in pitch as it plays.  It has more of a machine sound than a natural sound.

No, it sounds more like something was recorded and is playing for some reason.  Somewhat like the system sounds but different and longer.

When you hear this sound, are any apps open which includes browser(s)?

Yes lots.  The same ones that I almost always have had open.  Here's what I have been keeping open most of the time: Finder, Safari, Calendar, Stickies, Message, iTunes, Word, Acrobat Reader, Amazon Downloader, Spotify.  Messages is the most recent app that I've kept open, so it may be the problem.    My Message Received sound there is "Note" and I just played all of the other sounds in it and it isn't any of those.  The unwanted sound sounds like a whistle or something.

I'm going to quit Messages and see if I hear the sound the next time I wake the iMac up.  I'll let you know what happens.

Well you were on to something Baby Boomer.  It has something to do with Messages.  If it is closed there is no sound upon iMac wakeup.  I also noticed that when I reopened Messages I got the same sound.  It's like a startup sound for Messages.  I can't find anything in the help files on how to disable it.

Good going.  I was going to suggest that you quit out your apps one at a time until you find the culprit.  You beat me to it!

Post your specific concern in the Yosemite Messages sub forum.  No help there from the experts, there are quite a few Messages users posting over in the main iChat forums too.

As You've already figured it out this annoying sound comes from Messages app. And I just discovered that it's a sound of status change from "away" to "online" (or whatever it is called in english i OS X, I use my native language). When Mac wakes up from sleep it changes your status back to "online", and thats when this sound plays. Just uncheck boxes that change your status to away while asleep (uncheck 2nd and 4th box at the bottom of preferences window) and the sound is gone.

    PS

You can try to manually change status (left bottom corner) to away and back as a prove that it indicates the sound:)
