Q: imessage and Facetime sign in activation error iPad ios8.1.2

I notice another user has posted today 21st Jan 2015, the same problem I have had for a couple of days.

I have an iPad Air, an iPhone 5S and an iMac. Using my iPad on Saturday 18th suddenly couldn't see my imessages or use Facetime (I'd used FT half an hour before it all went); kept on getting Activation error on both Apps. BUT ONLY ON MY IPAD AIR?!

My iPhone and iMac work absolutely fine and I can continue to use both with imessage and Facetime. I have so far done the following, as advised by Apple Support and my local Apple Genius Bar appointment today:

  • Hard reset. Used home button and off button to reset. Didn't work
  • Reset Network settings. Didn't work
  • Reset All settings. Didn't work
  • Backed up and Restored iPad. Tried to log in to iMessage and Facetime from as new setup before restoring backup. Didn't work
  • Apple Genius bar performed a "deep restore". Didn't work
  • Apple Genius bar performed a "set up as brand new iPad" process. Didn't work
  • Logged out of Apple ID on iPhone then tried logging in to same Apple ID on iPad. Didn't work
  • Apple confirmed my Apple ID is correctly verified on their system.

Apple have now escalated my issue to their Engineering Team, so I hope they can fix, but the Apple guy in the store said he'd never come across this problem before.

I have been told IT IS NOT a hardware issue, it has to a a software issue, but it sounds more like me that it's an Apple verification issue on their servers?

If anyone has come across this, or can provide any other ideas I'd be most grateful. I still have use of imessage and Factime on my iPhone and iMac, so its more frustration that I have an expensive iPad Air that is missing paid-for functionality that I expect Apple to address and nothing more.

Thanks in advance

iPad Air, iOS 8.1.2

I Turned off iMessage and FaceTime, restarted the iPad, turned them back on and try to login to iMessage or FaceTime. This time I got the activation error again: "an error occurred during activation. Try again". I got in FaceTime for a split moment and then went straight back to requesting the password.

ok guys I am not an expert but if you guys still experience issues than try a reset one more time the easiest is maybe to go to general settings and than choose reset all settings you will only loose password for wifi and a couple setups like display brightness keyboard setup nothing really important. Maybe that helps I also restored my ipad twice and set it up as new not sure if that helped to solve the issue. Keep trying maybe it takes longer for some and less for other. Maybe location makes difference too. If I hear something from the senior tech I will pass it to you guys ASAP.

Hi Mikedonna call Apple support and stay on the phone even if they tell you that they will charge you for a service call. Usually they transfer you from the machine to real agent just explain the problem. If its apple fault they won't charge you anything. The more people call the better I guess.

II've already logged a call and escalated the problem. I cannot get imessage on my iPhone. All other devices are fine. That might also have something to do with the fact that I have not updated the software o them where as I have on my phone. But reset restored and pretty much every trick in the book and nothing is working. Must have been sheer luck Picasso. Lucky you. But it's still not working for me neither. PS I am in Australia as well so ita not just USA

Don't want to say too much, in case I jinx it, but as at this morning, both FaceTime & I Message are working for me. Whether it lasts, like the last poster, we will see!

Just called support, senior adviser also said working on it, but at least I am now reported. Thanks everyone for all the help, you guys are great.  And the $29 fee was not charged. So if you haven't called yet perhaps you should, the more reported the better.

Also having same issue as of the weekend, on my ipad mini, 1st generation, before AND after upgrading software. Started out of the

blue for no reason whatsoever. Suddenly it wanted a password but won't accept it on any wi fi network. Very annoyed since this is one

of the main reasons to get one, for instant communications with  family here and abroad. Hopefully someone knowledgeable can light

a fire  under Apple to get it fixed ASAP. Apple is at fault here and they aren't saying.

Well it hasn't fixed it for me!  Still get exactly the same "error occurred during activation message" for both iMessage and Facetime.
