I'm using a 20 inch imac (early 2008) it has tiger on it.The specs are an intel core 2 duo @ 2.4GHz, 4gb of ram 160gb HDD. I put snow leopard 10.6.8 on the flash drive (it currently has tiger 10.4.11) and i made it with disk utility. The partition is guid, and it doesn't show up in startup disk. I tried a .dmg of snow leopard but it says i need leopard 10.5 and I don't have a copy. Also the fan is always running at a high rpm.

What was the source of the Snow Leopard USB drive? If it was not the Snow Leopard retail disk, it will not work with your iMac.

The flash drive doesn't have a retail copy and I just ordered snow leopard. So when I receive the dvd it should work 100%?
Yes. A 2008 iMac can run the latest OSX. Note that if you want a newer OSX than Snow Leopard, you will have to to upgrade it to 10.6.8. The simplest way is to use the combo update.

My fan is running at full speed all the time. I have reset the smc butit didn't work. Do you know anything else I can do to fix it?
Get Temperature Monitor to see if it's heat related...
Open Activity Monitor and see if there are any applications taking a lot of CPU resources:

There are no apps taking a lot of cpu resources.. As soon as I start the imac the fan ramps up to 100%. The apple hardware test doesn't work. It just boots into osx. I'm guessing the applications install disk 2 isn't installed to it.
According to the apple hardware test it passed. I did the the 2 minute test and half hour test.
Did you download the temperature monitor as suggested by BDAqua. If so, what temperature are you experiencing?

Cpu core 1 is 49 C, 2 is 46 C, everything else related to the cpu is about 38 C, Graphics is about 47C,motherboard is
38C,PSU is about 64C, The Wireless module is around 53C,
Those are all acceptable temperatures. I can only suggest bringing in the iMac to an Apple store genius bar and have them determine why the fan is at maximum speed. As I said earlier, the AHT is not 100$% reliable when it is error free.

The enthernet port isn't working either. In the network diagnosatics it says failed. I know the cable works. I use with my PC all the time. Thanks OGELTHORPE and BDAqua for your help with this imac.
I'm doing a clean install of Snow Leopard right now. Maybe it might fix the Ethernet problem, but I doubt it.
Clean install of Snow Leopard fixed the Ethernet.
