Problem opening QuickTime

I just bought a Mac G5 to be used for music production and solely for that purpose. I do not want to connect to the Internet. I need to write music for movies using QuickTime, but when I try to open QuickTime I get a message telling me that the computer is not connected to the Internet and I am unable to open the program. Does anyone know why this is happening and what can I do to resolve this problem? Thank you!

Hi Jon,

I connected to the Internet and turned off "Show Content Guide Automatically". It did not work. In fact, I cannot open the QuickTime program at all. When I click on the QuickTime icon in the Dock, nothing happens. I upgraded to QuickTime 7 Pro thinking this might get the program working, and when I entered the Registration Key, it did nothing. The version of QuickTime that I have is 7.1.3. Do you think I should uninstall the program and reinstall it? I need to create music soundtracks using QuickTime Pro so I must get this program working somehow. Thanks very much!

I connected to the Internet and turned off "Show Content Guide Automatically". It did not work.

If you managed to access the "Preferences ..." area to turn the "Guide" off and your were able to access the "QT Preferences ..." area to enter your Pro registration, then the QT application must have loaded/opened at least once and you can now turn the Internet connect back off.

In fact, I cannot open the QuickTime program at all. When I click on the QuickTime icon in the Dock, nothing happens.

Does the aplication name "QuickTime Player" appear in the Menu bar at the top lefthand of the screen next to the "blue Apple?" If so, that is all that is supposed to happen now when you click on the QT application icon in the dock. (I.e., no player will open unless you manually open one from a menu option or double-click on a QT compatible file set to open with the QT Player.)

I upgraded to QuickTime 7 Pro thinking this might get the program working, and when I entered the Registration Key, it did nothing.

Not sure what you were expecting here. If the key was properly entered, it should now be plainly visible in the "QT Preferences... > Register" window. In addition, the words "Quicktime Pro 7" should appear immediately below the key entry line in this window, the word "Pro" should now be superimposed on the big blue "Q" in the "About QuickTime Player" window, and the word "Pro" should be removed from all of the previously non-functional menu options like "Export" and "Show Movie Properties." The problem here is that many people think "Pro" registration gives you an entirely new and separate application when, in reality, all it does is "unlock" capabilities built into the QT Player that are normally turned off for the unregistered user.

The version of QuickTime that I have is 7.1.3. Do you think I should uninstall the program and reinstall it?

Would ask that you check on and answer the above questions first to ensure that application is not really working at this time. Describle what you can or cannot see or do -- particularly with regard to the application menu bar indicators/Pro activity indicators. Also post any messages (modal or other) that may be displayed. Would hate for you to attempt to attempt an uninstall/reinstall unnecessarily here with all the problems others seem to be having. I am working on the oldest PPC G5 2.0 GHz model and have had no problems so I cannot fully test/attempt to dubplicate problems you may be have with latest Intel models. In any case, just wanted you to understand what you should be seeing and go from there.

Try turning off the "Show Content Guide Automatically" option located in the "Preferences > General" window under "Other" heading.

Thanks for the help, but I can't do as you suggest because I cannot open QuickTime. When I first click on the QuickTime icon in the Dock, I get the following text in the QuickTime window:

"Get connected to the Internet for your guide to the best in QuickTime content."

And that's it. There are no other options except to close the window. Clicking on the QuickTime icon again will not open the program. Do you have any other advice? Thank you!

"Get connected to the Internet for your guide to the best in QuickTime content."

1) If you have Internet connection capability and it is simply "turned off," then turn it on long enough to to make connection, open QT, reset the preference, and then turn it back off.

2) If you have Internet connection capability but refuse to turn it on, then try physically disconnecting it completely and hope the application/system reacts in a manner simmilar to Adobe's Photoshop 7 infamaous problem -- i.e., system detects the lack of connected hardware, issues modal warning, but then allows application to start after a short pause (and acknowledgement of warning if necessary).

3) If neither option is available, you could try manually modifying your QT .plist file or replacing it with one already properly configured. (Have no idea if this can be done/would work -- just an idea.)

4) Contact Apple QT Feedback and request that in the future the "Guide" option be defaulted to off when installed and/or request tecnical assistance.

5) Don't use the QT Player. (I.e., use an alternate media player.)

Hi Jon,

I'm happy to say that QuickTime Pro 7 is indeed installed and working perfectly. All the items you mention in your previous e-mail are present in QuickTime Pro and functioning. As I have had little experience with the Mac platform/applications, and being an old-time Windows user, I was a bit lost. Thanks so much for your kind and generous help. I appreciate it greatly.
