Hi Art Penebacker. When you mirror an iPad or iPhone to Apple TV, then expand a video player to full screen, the player may switch from mirroring to basic AirPlay. You can tell, because the player is grey, with a message saying "This video is playing on Apple TV". In that mode, it sends the video URL to Apple TV, which streams the video direct from the server. Some video servers do not accept this connection, and so Apple TV cannot display. If that happens, all you can do is go back to mirroring and make the player larger, but not full screen.

Hi Diana, with regards to the lack of video when the message "This video is playing on Apple TV", yours is the best explanation as to why this problem exists. I now have a question with two parts;

1) If I stream via a Macbook Pro and Airplay full screen, it works fine - so in this case, is the Apple TV using the Macbook Pro internet connection rather than the URL to stream directly from the server itself, and therefore just a problem (or iOS function) where the Apple TV looks to the server directly for the content rather than simply streaming the content from the iOS device? And;

2) If so, is there a way to force the Apple TV to continue to stream via the iOS device in the case where the Apple TV is not connected to the internet (peer to peer connection only)?

If it does indeed look to the server in full screen, then that would explain why the playback stops when set to full screen. Do you know if this behaviour is specific to youtube, or does it affect other video streaming methods/content.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Apple Community.

Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.

  1. Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
  2. Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
  3. Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
  4. Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
  5. Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
  6. Restart your mobile device.

With respect this is an exceptionally rare issue. If it's been posted recently by someone else I'd be suprised.

Most AirPlay problems are related to the individuals network and /or problems and corruption caused by them, the usual fix is to reset things or look at what it is that causing things to need resetting, hence the advice is usually the same. There is no AirPlay issue with the Apple TV, when there is a real problem it's quite apparent there is a real problem as reports about such problem are in the region of 10's of times more common.
