calendar does not accept 24 hour clock

Since installing Yosemite, when I try to enter 1500 for 3 PM the appointment window will not accept it. Preferences for Apple are set to 24 hour. Times of appointments are displayed as 24 hr. clock. Just that the appointment window beeps when I try to enter a number > 12. Bug?

Thanks for any help.

It appears that this has something to do with system settings. I was having the exact same problem. I checked and ensured that my preferences in Calendar were set to 24-hour (they were). Then I checked under system prefs and found that under Languages and Regions, the 24-hour box was not ticked--which is interesting since my tool bar still displays time in the 24-hour format. The box used to be ticked, and so perhaps the upgrade to Yosemite changed the setting. Odd though that the tool bar was still displaying 24-hour time even without the option selected in Languages and Regions (though after re-selecting it, when I deselected, the tool bar went back to 12-hour am/pm time). Anyway, after ticking that box "on" the calendar displays in 24-hour (as it did beforehand) but now the time entry areas are also in 24-hour. I hope this helps.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

Well that was interesting.

Test number one turns up the same error. Here's what happens.

User uploaded file

I am trying to enter an appointment for 1800. Notice that I am forced to enter 6:00 PM but the pop-up offers me the 24 hour clock for the end time and proceeds to display it as 12 hour. Weird, huh? I know the dates are earlier in the week, but it still behaved the same tonight.

So, guest or me, the calendar is confused.

But test two was really interesting. The safe mode start up seemed to go OK, but both the mouse and the keyboard were not recognized so I couldn't get past being asked for my password. Bluetooth came on searching for the keyboard, but didn't seem to find it. Anyway, I used the off button (couldn't get the mouse click to work on the off icon on the screen), waited 30 seconds and turned back on in normal mode. I still had problems getting the keyboard picked up but the batteries are low. We'll blame it on that.

So, I still have a dodgy calendar and heaven only knows what's going on in Safe Mode. Not sure I want to find out. As for peripherals, the only ones constantly plugged in are the 'Time Machine' and an Apple external dvd drive (which came with the machine). The printer is WiFi and only turned on when I want it. Everything else is plugged in when I need it. Everything else on this machine is what Apple put there before I got it. The only login items are iTunes Helper, Garmin, Skype and Dropbox. Not a long list.

Any ideas about why the Safe mode went 'unsafe'? And why do I have to be in safe mode when I can get the list in normal mode just by looking? You mentioned that WiFi might not work, but not that bluetooth might go funny. That's pretty fundamental for me as I do not possess a USB keyboard and do not intend to buy one just to sort out a calendar problem.

Thanks for trying. If you have any other suggestions, I'll be glad to test them out.
