Random problem with no ring tone or message alert.

I have a one week old iPhone 6 with iOS 8.1.2. Sometimes calls and messages produce no sound. In the case of calls, they kick over to voice mail after just one ring. This situation is intermittent only. After missing a few calls or messages, everything turns back to normal for a while. Then it comes back.
