Airplay only works through iTunes, No mirroring or other sound options (macbook air 2014, apple tv 3rd Gen)

I have been trying to connect my macbook air (2014 model running yosemite) to my 3rd gen apple tv. They are connect to the same wifi network. The icon for airplay only appears in iTunes and music streaming to the apple tv works fine through iTunes, however the icon that appears in the top bar is not present and I have checked the box in Systems preference > display for icon to appear. My iPhone 6 finds the apple tv fine and is able to mirror.




Any one have any ideas? Help would be appreciated!
