Q: ePub - All Blank Pages Appear After 30 Pages?

Hello,

I’m getting All Blank Pages when viewing ePub output file? Nothing appear beyond 30 pages(no text nor graphics). The first 30 pages appear without problems.

My Page Settings are as follows: Graphics are selected as Inline for graphics, Text boxes-Stay on Page, Page Breaks on every page, all text is styled.

I have tried several variations of text/graphics settings but cannot get anything to appear beyond 30 or so pages (everything is invisible beyond this point).

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I’m a newbie using Pages, so feel free to provide instructions.

I should also mention, that several of the last pages do re-appear at the very end of the book. Book is only 50 pages, 50/50 graphic and text (children’s book style)

    Assumption: Pages v5.5.2.

Instead of export to ePub, does the content print correctly as a PDF (File ▸ Export To ▸ PDF) document without the blank pages? Had you successfully exported a correct ePub, and then on subsequent exports, the blank pages began to appear?

In the Pages menu bar, select View > Show Invisibles. Also, Show Page Thumbnails. Scrolling down through the thumbnails, find the page (and section) that appears just before the blank pages commence in your ePub. What type of content (invisibles, regular text, Fonts, Text box(s), Styles, Shapes, Images) do you find on these pages? When you click on a thumbnail, that yellow boundary that appears is a section. Is there a section change, or multiple section changes in the vicinity of where these blank pages begin, and end?

Same question as the previous paragraph where the blank pages end, and content resumes in your ePub.

Great troubleshooting idea!  Going to test your suggestions right now.  Just got home from work.

    In answer to your questions:

1 - The PDF printed all the pages correctly(no blank pages).

    2 - TOC Thumbnails(all thumbnails appear-no blank pages).

When I click on a single page a yellow border highlight appears around the entire thumbnail frame(no individual thumb has a highlighted border).

3 - Same content on every screen: image, text box with typical Styles applied.

The yellow border in the thumbnail view is a section boundary.

You may have something in your content that is bringing out even more of the worst in Pages v5.5.2. Not certain what that could be either.

Suggest you grab the free, open source Sigil ePub editor (you want the Sigil-0.8.2-Mac-Package.dmg). Once downloaded, single-click the icon next to your Dock's Trash can. At the bottom of the list is the downloaded Sigil application. Single-click to launch the installer, which just opens up to show you a stylistic S. Drag this S application into another Finder window opened on /Applications. You will need to right-click on this application, and click Open, as it is not from the OS X App Store. Afterward, it will open normally via double-click. Sigil home site.

See how your ePub looks in Sigil.

    Hello,

Two weeks later and suddenly I have the same image dropping problems. Only this time, I have only 30 pages vs 70. I ran through trouble shooting steps in previous feedback:

    - I get yellow highlight around all thumbnails.
    - Printed PDF(all pages appear),
    - remove two problematic pages(epubs with no errors!!!), It is definitely these 2 pages that are the culprit!!!
    - tried replace with 2 new pages and screen shots(problem returns-two pages disappear).

    - Image files are small 50-90K/page.

    - tried grouping and ungrouping (lots of pages are grouped).

I think I’m overlooking something about pages, or I have a weird system issue?

    I am stumped.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You may have to abandon Pages v5.5.2 for something that actually works.

About all you can do now is duplicate the current offending .pages document, and call the dupe PITA.pages. You won't change this, it will be your control copy. Open both documents in Pages, so you have two windows and thumbnail views. Show invisibles in both.

In the current document that you duped PITA from, choose File > Revert To > Browse All Versions… .

Go back a revision at a time, and attempt to generate an acceptible ePub from it. When you can, compare that document to PITA.pages. See if you can spot the cause for the ePub misadventure.

Beyond this, I can't offer much more than the first sentence.

    Viking,

I tried all the suggestions and updated to Pages 5.52, and still no go.

Any suggestions on other Mac Platform Word Processing apps?  Any free apps that can open a Pages documents?

    Thanks

    I Just Notice Something -

    LARGE FILE SIZE

My KDP ePub file size is a whooping 18M!!!

    SPECS:

    Pages-40

    File Type-PNG,

Size each graphic is 60K x 20images total should be only = 1.2M.

PS I compared other books and notice with similar attributes and their size averaged only 1-3M.

Why is my Pages & ePub file size so large?

    Any ideas?

The only application that can open Pages documents, other than Preview, is Pages itself, and under certain conditions, it cannot open its own documents. Of course, once you export the Pages documents to Word .docx, that broadens your choices. It would be easy to recommend Office for Mac 2011, but I do not believe there is any ePub export functionality there. You will need a Word to ePub converter from the OS X App Store.

Apple has a downloadable, Pages v5 compatible template, “Creating ePub files with Pages,” that might help you potentially cleanup your existing document to generate a clean ePub. Of course, if Pages treats ePubs like it does Word documents, it will cause large bloat in the exported solution. Feeding a Word document from Pages into a Kindle Development pipeline that expects real Word documents may be counter-intuitive.
