Q: Safari locked out by Malicious Virus Attack...

Today my Safari was locked out and this warning popped up on my screen. "

Critical Security Warning! Your Mac is infected with a malicious virus attack.

Please contact tech support at +1-888-307-2735 and provide error code WBACK7917 to scan and resolve any potential threats to your personal and financial information, which was being tracked by suspicious connection.

Consequently we are performing additional security checks to verify the source of the attack and have halted all your system resources in order to prevent any additional damage to your system and information."

I called the number but the rep didn't identify herself only stated that they work with Apple & Safarii to help reduce these problems, then proceeded to ask for permission to enter my laptop remotely. I colorfully told her where she could go. So my Safari is locked out, MacKeeper hasn't identified the problem and the Safari app doesn't show in Mackeeper for me to uninstall the entire application. Please help me get rid of Safari then load a brand new one without the Debbie does Dallas getting her sticky fingers in my MaBbook Pro (17-inch) OS X updated 10.10.1 Yosemite.

How can I uninstall Safari on my MacBook Pro when it is entwined into the OS X operating system? Then reinstall a clean version.

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

This happened to me today too! I called and it took me a little while but knew they were only trying to get me to pay for the stupid firewall. He was kind of a smart mouth when I told him I could not afford to pay it The did remote my lap top but he quickly became unhelpful and short when I told him I could not pay for it. I am running AVG AND the malware apple suggested and someone posted about also. Anyone have any props if they had remote access?

I called the number too, talked to the guy, and he was really desperate to keep me on the phone to access my computer.  It was scary!

The suggest fix worked for me.  Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!

The interesting thing is, my Safari search has not been working lately.  I could type in something I wanted to search, but then nothing would happen when I clicked to search, or even if I clicked the enter/return bar on my keyboard.

The virus repair recipe solved that problem too.

Happy Day!  I hope it stays that way.

This happened to me today. I figured out it was probably not real ransomware, but it was disturbing because I could not close the tab or the window -- the red "close" button at the upper left was dimmed out, as was the "x" icon for closing the tab. I quit and restarted, but the window came back. I tried searching the url in firefox, to get information, got the same window in the other browser. MORE disturbing.

I disabled Javascript, quit Safari, turned off WiFi, restarted Safari. This made it possible to close the window and the tab. Just to be safe, I deleted all cookies and my history. Everything seems okay now.

Just to add to the knowledge base here as well. Just had this on my safari (managed to use chrome to get some info on it). The fix did not directly work for me but when turning of the wifi it allowed me to clear all website data. The block is removed now, so fingers crossed it is gone for good.
    Cheers,

MacKeeper? Check the forums. This is malware.
